Opinion: Wolves made mistake signing 22 y/o, exit from Molineux couldn’t have gone worse

Wolverhampton Wanderers sold Paulo Manuel Neves Alves to 1.FK Pribram in 2019, but he struggled for playing time in the Czech Republic and returned to Sanjoanense just months later. Unfortunately, the 22-year-old has found himself on the periphery at the Estádio Conde Dias Garcia too and finds his career spiralling after more than 18 months of inactivity.

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

Paulinho spent three years at Liverpool before making the switch to Wolves, but he failed to realise his potential at Molineux. As per Transfermarkt, the Portuguese midfielder made 13 Premier League 2 appearances and two EFL Trophy appearances, scoring one goal for his troubles. He didn’t do enough to warrant a contract extension, however, and was offloaded to Pribram.

Paulinho had a point to prove after failing in England but found opportunities hard to come by at Na Litavce. The 22-year-old made just one appearance for Pribram before being axed four months later. His situation is identical at Sanjoanense, as the midfielder hasn’t featured in any of their 2. Division Campeonato de Portugal games since joining on January 8.

Paulinho has led a nomadic career, playing for Sanjoanense (2014 – 2015) (2020 – present), FC Porto (2007 – 2), PFC Sub (2012 – 2013) Liverpool (2015 – 2018), Wolves (2018 – 2019) and Pribram (2019 – 2020), but he’s been unable to settle at one club and nail down a starting place.

It remains to be seen if he’ll become a regular when the season resumes.
