Opinion: Wolves exit couldn’t have gone worse for 25 y/o, now playing semi-pro football

Jonathan Flatt left Wolverhampton Wanderers for Scunthorpe United in 2018, ending a 15-year association with the club, but the goalkeeper’s career spiralled after the move and he now finds himself out of the Football League entirely.

So, what happened?

Which club did Wolves sign Raul Jimenez from?

Flatt joined Wolves at the age of eight and rose through the youth ranks to the fringes of the first-team in 2014. As per Transfermarkt, the 25-year-old played 47 times for the u23s and kept eight clean sheets, but he never managed to feature at senior level. As per Transfermarkt, Flatt was an unused substitute five times in 2013/14, 11 times in 2014/15, twice in 2015/16 and four times in 2016/17.

Flatt’s lack of playing time led to him embarking upon a number of loan moves. He made five appearances at Wrexham (November 20, 2014 – January 4, 2015), zero appearances at Chesterfield (March 26, 2015 – May 31, 2015), 10 appearances at Cheltenham Town (March 3, 2016 – May 2, 2016), 22 appearances at Barrow (January 5, 2017 – May 31, 2017) and seven appearances at Cheltenham Town (July 1, 2017 – December 28, 2017), as per Transfermarkt.

The 25-year-old left Wolves in 2018 and joined Scunthorpe on a free transfer, but he continued to struggle for playing time. Flatt made just four appearances in all competitions and spent the majority of his debut season behind Rory Watson and Jack Alnwick in the pecking order being released at the end of the campaign. He joined Rushall Olympics last summer – a semi-pro club in the BetVictor Southern League Premier Central.

They were fifth in the table before the season was postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the Southern League is worlds apart from the heady heights of Wolves just two years ago.
