According to Birmingham Live, Max Kilman could be loaned out by Wolverhampton Wanderers before the Football League transfer window shuts at 5pm. Birmingham Live say Wolves have mulled the idea of letting him develop elsewhere for the season, but I can’t see that happening.

Kilman does need more opportunities

Kilman joined Wolves from Maidenhead in 2018 and has gone on to make 13 appearances in all competitions. The 23-year-old has featured only once this season, however, as he’s behind Conor Coady, Romain Saiss and Willy Boly in the pecking order.

Kilman has two more years remaining on his deal at Molineux, but he needs regular playing time for the sake of his development. If opportunities are going to be few and far between under Nuno Espirito Santo, he will need to consider his future. Unfortunately, we’ve left it too late to do something on deadline day.

We’ve left it too late to source a replacement

We’ve been on the hunt for a central defender all summer and have been linked with Kristoffer Ajer, Gabriel Magalhaes, Christian Luyindama, Ousseynou Ba, Tosin Adarabioyo, Ruben Dias, Diego Llorente, Nicolas N’Koulou and Robin Koch without getting a deal over the line.

If we keep Kilman, we’ll have enough depth at the back to get us up to January. Marcal is a makeshift centre-back, Ryan Bennett did play for us last season and Roderick Miranda is on the books as a last resort. If Kilman leaves, we don’t have many options that Nuno would want to call upon.

Bennett and Miranda are on the transfer list and would be offloaded if a suitor made an acceptable bid, so we need more than just Marcal as a trusted alternative, especially as we play with three central defenders.

The transfer window shuts at 5pm, so could we really agree a deal to loan out Kilman and bring in a replacement in just a matter of hours? I can’t see it happening.

It’s not ideal letting Kilman stagnate by having him sit on the bench for most of the season, but we don’t have a choice.
