Opinion: Move for 20-year-old would only work out on one condition

|

Dion Sanderson has clearly shown a lot of promise over the last month in Cardiff.

However, with Football Insider reporting that Aston Villa are interested in the player, it would be a sideways move unless the club got relegated.

The 20-year-old has been linked away from the club once more, but with Villa having a pretty long list of centre backs, it’s hard to see him making much more progress in Birmingham than he has at Wolverhampton.

According to the outlet, a “Villa source” has said that the club are keeping close tabs on Sanderson, and they could potentially be interested in a loan move, though they could face further competition from Cardiff.

Unless Villa can assure the player that he will get first-team football, then it is hard to see how this could benefit Sanderson as he is unlikely to jump the queue within that side considering he only has a handful of professional games under his belt.

Could Dion Sanderson join Wolverhampton Wanderers' first-team next season?

Yes

No

The defender failed to make the squad for four out of the first five matchday squads since he joined Neil Harris’ team, but an injury to Jazz Richards meant that he found a way into the team at right-back. He managed to impress and got three starts on the bounce before the season was suspended due to the coronavirus outbreak, with him assisting on one of those occasions.

While it is very encouraging for Wolves fans to see the youngster play at Championship level, it is important to keep a bit of perspective.

He has never played a Premier League game, and these three matches are by far the highest standard he has played at, so is he really ready for a loan move to a Premier League club?

Of course, Villa are a huge outfit who demand respect regardless of whether you are a Wolves fan, but would he – and the club – not be better off allowing him to settle in at Cardiff and start playing regularly there?

It’s great that he’s attracting attention on the basis of these three performances, so let him build confidence there while gaining valuable experience, rather than sending him on loan to a team where he is far less guaranteed to be playing.

If Villa were relegated and it looked clear that he could be playing regularly, then a move could be on the cards as it is nice and close to home and for a massive club. But if not, then just continue at Cardiff.
