Official: Wolves confirm third summer departure, centre-back ‘leaving from Wolves academy’

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that Connor Johnson is ‘leaving from Wolves Academy’, joining Jordan Graham and Phil Ofosu-Ayeh through the exit door.

The 22-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance since rising through the youth ranks and was out of contract this summer, so his departure has been on the cards for some time.

Johnson made the matchday squad twice at senior level for Wolves – he was an unused substitute in their EFL Cup win over Crawley Town (August 9, 2016) and EFL Cup win over Southampton (August 23, 2017).

The centre-back’s lack of first-team football resulted in him being loaned out to Telford United (September 5, 2017 – January 31, 2018), Walsall (August 31, 2018 – May 31, 2019) and Kilmarnock (September 2, 2019 – May 31, 2020), where he made one, 11 and seven appearances respectively.

Johnson spent a lot of his Kilmarnock stint providing backup for Alex Bruce, Dario Del Fabro and Stuart Findlay, however, so  he has little chance of breaking into Wolves first-team with Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Max Kilman, Romain Saiss and Leander Dendoncker for competition.

A new deal was never coming his way. Johnson is 22 years of age and needs regular playing time for the sake of his development, so he’s better off leaving Wolves and embarking upon a new adventure elsewhere.
