Official: Wolves confirm sixth summer departure, right-back ‘leaving from Wolves academy’

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that Jed Abbey is ‘leaving from Wolves Academy’, joining Jordan Graham, Phil Ofosu-Ayeh, Connor Johnson, Callum Thompson and Ming-Yang Yang through the exit door.

The 18-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance at Wolves, failed to make the step-up to the U23s and was at the end of his contract this summer, so his departure isn’t surprising.

Abbey has made 32 appearances for the U18s, scoring five goals and making five assists. The versatile right-back, who has also operated in midfield and out wide, made 16 appearances this season, contributing a total of seven goals.

He turned 18 in January and was overlooked for promotion to the U23s, so Wolves are left with little choice but to let him go. In the reserve-team, Oskar Buur was ahead of Abbey in the right-back pecking order while Terry Taylor, Owen Otasowie and Wai-Tsun Dai were ahead in midfield.

There wasn’t a clear pathway for Abbey to progress and get playing time to boost his development, so now he’s on the hunt for a new club. Wolves have already deleted his profile, so they’re cleaning house very quickly. Where he’ll end up next season remains to be seen.
