Official: Wolves confirm fourth summer departure, winger ‘leaving from Wolves academy’

|

Wolverhampton Wanderers have confirmed that Callum Thompson is ‘leaving from Wolves Academy’, joining Jordan Graham, Phil Ofosu-Ayeh and Connor Johnson through the exit door.

The 19-year-old failed to make a first-team appearance at Wolves, has struggled out on loan and was out of contract this summer, so he’s another player whose departure comes as no surprise.

Thompson joined the Midlands outfit from St. Joseph Boys in 2017 and has gone on to make 34 appearances for the U18s, scoring two goals and making two assists. He’s also made 11 appearances for the U23s but hasn’t got off the mark.

The Republic of Ireland winger was loaned out to Bohemians in January, in a bid for regular first-team football, but his stint at the Dalymount Park hasn’t gone to plan. Thompson was left out of the matchday squad in every game for the Bohs before the Covid-19 pandemic caused the season to be postponed.

With Adama Traore, Daniel Podence, Diogo Jota and Pedro Neto standing in his way of first-team football at Wolves, Thompson never looked likely to get the nod from Nuno Espirito Santo. Where he’ll end up next season remains to be seen, however, as the 19-year-old’s failed loan move may have damaged his reputation.
