Morgan Gibbs-White underperformed in Wolverhampton Wanderers’ 3-2 defeat to Espanyol on Thursday, leading to calls from some supporters for him to be loaned out next season.

Should Wolverhampton Wanderers loan out Morgan Gibbs-White next season?

The 20-year-old has struggled for playing time this season as Joao Moutinho, Ruben Neves, Leander Dendoncker and Romain Saiss are ahead of him in the pecking order. A back injury that kept him out for two months also contributed to his lack of minutes.

Gibbs-White has made 13 appearances in all competitions. In the Premier League, he’s featured only four times and racked up only three minutes of top-flight football since September 2019. Since returning from injury in January, the midfielder has mostly been an unused substitute.

His appearance against Espanyol on Thursday was his first in the Europa League since October 2019 and the last time he started a first-team game too. If Nuno Espirito Santo can’t guarantee the 20-year-old more opportunities next season, he can’t afford to stay in 2020/21.

Gibbs-White still has two-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, so a permanent transfer looks unlikely this summer, but he needs regular football for the sake of his development.
