Yesterday we reported the sad news that Matt Murray has retired from professional football at the age of 29.

Following a succession of injuries, it wouldn’t have come as a big shock to Wolves fans, with many probably expecting the news to come eventually.

Vital Wolves users were quick to leave their messages of support for Matt.

‘Good luck to Murray in whatever he decides to do next. Hopefully the club will be able to offer him some kind of role??’ akela

‘Gutted for Matt. He really was a great talent. Arguably our best keeper since Bert Williams. If not for the injuries he would have definitely got lots of full England caps. All the best for the future.’ thehappywanderer

‘Thanks for the Memories Big Lad , Sheff Utd and WBA where he had a personal battle with Kamara spring to mind. Will always be remembered in high regard and a talent that unfortunately was never fully realised. All the best for the Future MM !!!’ ODDJOB79

‘Yes one of the best goalkeepers we never had!! Never reached his full potential but still some great memories. On a personal note, when he saved the penalty at the Millennium, we knew we were on the way to the promised land. All the best Matt in whatever way your career goes next, maybe a position at the Wolves???’ Crete Wolf

Following the announcement Murray spoke to Wolves Official Website and said: ‘I did everything I could but when I got to that last bit of training I just don’t think I can play to the level I need to play at.

‘It has given me a lot of discomfort and it does affect me to the extent I was sometimes finding it difficult to walk properly after training.

‘Everyone here has been unbelievable – the physios, the doc, the gaffer, the fans – I couldn’t have asked for any more from anyone.’

But despite the devastating news, he remained upbeat and positive about his career and went on to conclude: ‘I’ve had a couple of seasons I really enjoyed and I wouldn’t change it for the world particularly with the people I’ve met along the way and the experiences I have had.’

Top man, sad to see the fight end and really hope he will return to the club in some capacity.
