A new name on the rumour mill this past week has been Manchester United failure Marcos Rojo with Wolverhampton Wanderers being tagged with an interest in him amongst a number of other clubs, namely Everton when it comes to being name-checked.

The 28-year-old’s days are numbered at Old Trafford with speculation only increasing that he’s set for pastures new this transfer window. Following a reported £16million switch from Sporting Lisbon back in late August 2014, the Argentinian has gone on to make a total of 107 appearances in total for United, with the vast majority being from the start of matches but his face certainly doesn’t seem to fit under Jose Mourinho and he only made 12 appearances for them last year.

A report in Argentine newspaper Ole (via Sport Witness) carries an interview with the player and even though there appears to be little of substance in reports of our interest in him, he’s clearly not enamoured by that speculation with an apparent line of he has no interest in such a transfer because ‘we are a minor club’.

With talk of a rough £27-30million valuation in the media when it comes to the player, and the obligatory ‘I want a payrise’ I wouldn’t touch him with somebody else’s bargepole at that sort of cost to the club.

Even allowing for the context being distorted and chances for mistranslation coming into play, given how his time at Old Trafford has gone his attitude is a red flag for me. In his position, he should be wanting to prove himself and prove the ‘Special One’ wrong in the process. He should welcome interest from any top-flight side to maintain his position and then use his performances to ram criticisms down the throats of others.

Taking off the Wolves goggles, whilst we might be making a stir in football nobody knows how the next 12 months will go on the pitch so some players will have doubts as there are more presumed ‘stable’ top-flight options, but sensible players – especially when struggling themselves – should have the IQ to be more diplomatic than that when dealing with the media.

Some will now question, given that arrogance, whether it explains why things went wrong for him at his current club and whilst some clubs might be willing to take the risk still, an attitude like that often reduces the pool of interest in you.

A now ‘minor’ player himself, seemingly self-entitled…you never hear of plenty again in football and a few years later you wonder where they went having not noticed at the time.
