Wolves went to St James’ Park with the one of aim of dragging Newcastle United into the relegation battle.
A win for Wolves would have brought them within a point of us, instead Kevin Nolan, Shola Ameobi and Peter Lovenkrands gave Newcastle a 3-0 lead within 5 minutes of the second half starting to basically push Newcastle past the invisible safety line of 39 points.
Sylvan Ebanks-Blake got us a consolation, while Jonas Gutierrez made it 4-1 in the 90th minute.
The result leaves us 19th with 7 games to play, but with the bottom 11 clubs separated by 7 points, any club which can string a back-to-back wins together will probably survive.
The problem is the last time we strung a couple of wins together was in pre season when we beat Hearts and Athletic Bilbao!
In the league you have to look back to December 2009.
But there was one highlight to take from the game and that was the return of Michael Kightly.
Kights made an appearance on 53 minutes when he replaced Adam Hammill.
It was his first senior appearance for 16 months.
“The operations seem to have done the trick – I should have had them done a year ago but that`s just hindsight and I`m just happy to be back.’ he told the Express & Star.
He continued: “There`s still a lot of football to play so it would be nice for me to help the lads stay in this league.
“Everyone at the club has stuck by me and we`ve come through the other side now.
“I`m trying to concentrate on getting as many minutes as I can on the pitch.”
Vital Wolves Comment: Since Doyle was injured on international duty we have been running a front page poll asking who we should select to play in his place.
