Around this time six years ago, in June of 2004, Jelle van Damme joined a Premier League club hoping to test his mettle in England.

The club was Southampton, but the 20 year old found it extremely hard to make an impact, appearing only 6 times in his first season there before being loaned out to Werder Bremen the second, and last, season he was on the books at St Mary’s.

Now at 26, and having established himself with four solid years at Anderlecht, and in the Belgian national team with 29 caps, the versatile defender is eager to right past wrongs.

Van Damme should figure prominently in Mick McCarthy’s plans for the 2010/11 campaign, with some clubs even going as far as saying his capture is a ‘coup’ for McCarthy considering the massive talent Van Damme has yet to take full advantage of.

He told the Express and Star that ‘Its a big thrill for me to play again in the Premier League,’ and that coming back to England for a second chance in the league has been one of his long term goals.

Able to play centre back, left back, and even midfield if needed, Van Damme will have every opportunity to make the most of this second chance.
