Jay, Wolves and more

It’s excitement time again, the week that leads up to the big kick off. At 5.20 this Saturday we will get a glimpse at our team once again. Obviously a win doesn’t mean automatic promotion and a defeat doesn’t mean relegation. You will find people who take the first game of the season as a serious pointer to what will happen in the following 45 league games, these are just bored people who like to moan though.

A year ago it wasn’t a nice time to be a Wolves fan, the team had been dismantled, the chinless wonder had walked out and Mick McCarthy had to dive all over the place looking for signings. He built a squad with great unity and it looked like that was going to carry over to this season. Until Saturday when everyone got a glimpse into the harsh world of Mick McCarthy. I feel sympathy for Jay Bothroyd, his goal v Reading was his 5th of the pre-season and yet he believes he will start the season as 3rd or 4th choice striker. His gesture towards the bench was ill advised though and McCarthy promptly subbed him.
An over-reaction for sure by Mick but Jay’s response of sitting on the bench and not flouncing down the tunnel, shows he knows he made a mistake.

On to the new season, against Watford I expect the same 11 that started v Reading to start again. Despite Seyi’s, as of yet, unexplained absence from the teams media day at Molineux yesterday. My personal feelings is that we will be 1 of 5 teams chasing the top 2. Saturdays opponents Watford along with Charlton, Sheff Utd and WBA will be with us.
I reckon Leicester and Southampton will be in the race fill the other top 6 space.

It promises to be an exciting season for us, our defence is still creaking but I believe Mick will bring in players on loan. He won’t bring in people just because they can play in a certain position, he will scout the best players available and then move if he feels they can improve the team and fit in with the squad. It sounds so simple but something previous Wolves managers failed to do.

The Saturday ritual returns before we go in front of the Sky cameras. Bring it on and here’s to Mick McCarthy’s Gold and Black Army.
