It’s fair to say that Wolves Kevin Foley didn’t take the news that he wasn’t included in Ireland Euro 2012 side very well.
The 27-year-old was not named as part of Giovanni Trapattoni’s 23-man Republic of Ireland for this summers Euro 2012 tournament in Poland and the Ukraine on Monday.
While Foley has been suffering from a hamstring problem, the news came as a total surprise to Foley after initially being named in the squad.
But with injury doubts over John O’Shea and Darren O’Dea, Trapattoni decided to dump Foley in favour of Paul McShane who offers cover for both positions with his versatility.
‘It is hard to take, you know. I sort of feel betrayed. I don’t want to go into too much detail. I just feel betrayed.’ Foley told the Telegraph, before going into more detail adding: ‘I wanted to prove a point, that I was fit to play because from what I understood, I could have trained last week, Thursday, Friday and been involved in the game [against Bosnia on Saturday].
‘He (Trapattoni) said there was no rush and we will wait to train in Italy, so I trained for two days in Italy and felt great. And then all of a sudden, he pulls me this morning just before the end and says, ‘You are not in the squad’, and that is hard to take.
