I wrote the following response, thinking I was viewing the WW website, but thought it worth repeating here. Perhaps there are other WW fans out there who, like me, think we are ill-advisedly getting rid of a tremendous asset in exactly the aspect of our play where we are most deficient.
Clearly, Hibs fans recognize his value to their team and so should we. I discount the argument that he is scoring goals solely against moderate opposition and that they therefore don’t count. Clips of his goals show a player with considerable skill and vision. apart from his goals, he also brings others into the game. Note, too, they head Celtic at the top of the Scottish PL.
I think the reason why we are getting rid of him is not due to management’s assessment of him as a player but rather to a sense of pique. I suspect that Griffiths has fallen foul of SS in the same way as he did with MM, both seeing him as a disruptive influence. Indeed, an altercation between Griffiths and SS did occur in the summer and that probably decided the issue.
Had it not occurred, I suspect SS would have taken a more lenient view of a player who subsequently has been scoring at better than one goal a game. Surely, it’s a mark of a good manager that he can cope with sparky individuals like Griffiths and get them to focus their energies productively on the pitch. And, this is what seems to be happening at Hibs.
I am not sure that Griffiths wants to come back but SS should be big enough to give him the opportunity to prove himself in the Champioship. Goodness knows, we could benefit from the presence of a striker who knows where the net is … and he would be an even greater asset after Christmas if our current situation fails to improve.
If we do sell him, surely he is worth more than £150,000? If that is all we are going to get for him in January, we might as well try him out until the end of the year. It could work. After all, we are putting a lot of faith in the inexperienced and untested Cassidy and the callow Siggy as the players to improve our goal tally.
