I’m not a fan of the sack ’em culture in football these days.
When the likes of Roberto Di Matteo can be sacked at Chelsea just months after lifting the European Cup, it’s quite clear that a football club manager in the modern day era is only one or two games away from the sack at anyone time, no matter what his achievements at said club.
So what of a newly appointed football manager? Just how much time should they be given if results are not happening?
Should he be given time to build his squad? Just when is it clear that things are not working?
Should Wolverhampton Wanderers be considering Ståle Solbakken’s position after nine games without a victory? 3 points from a possible 27?
We’ve gone from the Kings of Wolverhampton to the Idoits of Wolverhampton over the past month, a phrase that is likely to stick with big Norwegian. But just how much time should he be given to return his squad to a regal standing?
“The players feel they are in a situation where they are really close to turning the corner. We have been there this season, we had something good going but that is difficult to argue now.’ he told the Birmingham Mail.
He does have a point, we went through a lot of changes over the summer, saw a lot of faces leave Molineux and a lot of faces come in. That all takes time to gel and develop and understanding.
When a lot of those players are also foreign, then there should also be allowances for them to settle into England’s culture and the style of the English Championship.
That goes for the gaffer as well, he will make mistakes, as will the players, its just whether or not you believe he will learn from them?
He continued: “I have to sort things out quick because it is not normal that players with that ability do so many technical mistakes… not just technical but also tactical mistakes as we did in the second half. Such little things can tip it the other direction.
“You can look for 200 reasons but it is not the first time it has happened.
So how do you feel about Solbakken?
astraltrader asked the question last week: Has Our Progress Under Stale Solbakken been Acceptable So Far?
Only 8% went with – Too early to tell
22% said that it’s still a work in progress
Which left 70%, stating that progress under Solbakken has not yet been acceptable.
44% said No – It’s been disappointing, while 26% said No – It’s been a backward step.
So what should happen next?
