Former England international and now pundit Joleon Lescott has warned Raul Jimenez about potentially making a move to Manchester United.
The Mexican forward has been in inspired form all season, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists, meaning that he has been linked to some big clubs.
Manchester United have been the side who have been linked to him more than anyone else as they look to add another goalscoring forward to their ranks.
However, former Wanderers defender Lescott is not sure that making a move north to Manchester would be the best option for him, given that they don’t seem much of a step up from Nuno Espirito Santo’s side at the current moment in time.
Speaking to the Grand National (via The Mirror), Lescott said: “The interest in Jimenez doesn’t surprise me, he’s performed consistently over the past two seasons and that’s the key.”
“He’s not just coming in and having good periods then going cold again.
“There will, of course, be interest in him as he’s such a good player, I suppose it just depends on how realistic this interest is.
For example, if it’s Chelsea, then you may look to them as more of a possibility of playing Champions League.
“Whereas if you look at interest from Man United, and you look at the team’s current success – are Man United better than Wolves?
“Are they guaranteed to finish higher than Wolves next season? Who knows!”
Would Manchester United be a step up for Jimenez?
Yes
No
Unsure
It’s hard to disagree with Lescott at this moment in time, especially when you consider that the former Atletico forward is now 28-years-old and is probably at his peak currently.
Whether he sees Manchester United as a step up could very well depend on what happens in the rest of the season. At the moment, they are pretty much level pegging: both sides are in the final 32 of Europe and they both have accumulated 35 points in the league after 25 matches.
Indeed, if United kick on and secure European football while Wolves don’t, then it could make sense for the forward to move on, even if it is just Europa League. Similarly, if Wolves qualify for the Europa League and United make the Champions League, then the Red Devils suddenly look a much more attractive prospect.
