Wolves striker Steven Fletcher has not been overlooked by Great Britain manager Stuart Pearce.
It had been previously reported that the Scottish striker had not been considered for the British squad, but those reports have now been dismissed with an official announcement that Fletcher has been included in the provisional 35-man-squad list which has been submitted to FIFA.
While the Olympics may not usually be high up on the list of priorities of British footballers due to us not usually being involved (A Team GB football team has not competed in the Olympics since 1960), the London 2012 has given some players the unique prospect of being involved, in what is seen by many as a once in a lifetime opportunity.
Stuart Pearce who will lead the Great Britain mens team and one of the hardest tasks he will have to take on, will be cutting down his squad to just 18, which cannot include any more than three players over the age of 23.
At 25-years-old Fletcher falls into this category and is thought to be up against players like David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Craig Bellamy and Joe Cole.
Team GB will face Senegal at Old Trafford on July 26, United Arab Emirates at Wembley on July 29 and Uruguay at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium on August 1, before hopefully advancing into the knock-out stages of the competition.
