According to the Daily Mail, Cardiff City and Sheffield Wednesday are interested in Dion Sanderson and hope to agree a deal with Wolverhampton Wanderers before the Football League transfer window shuts on Friday evening.

The 20-year-old impressed on loan at Cardiff last season and will be sent out again to get first-team football as he’s behind Conor Coady, Willy Boly, Romain Saiss and Max Kilman in the pecking order under Nuno Espirito Santo.

It wouldn’t be a surprise if he left temporarily, but the Daily Mail say we’re open to selling him permanently which would be a shock.

Why Cardiff?

Sanderson made 10 appearances on loan at Cardiff last season and fared well at right-back, so the Bluebirds would like him for the entirety of this campaign. City only have one natural right-back on the books – Jordi Osei-Tutu – who joined on loan from Arsenal, so they need depth.

They aren’t short of options at centre-back with Sean Morrison, Aden Flint, Curtis Nelson and Sol Bamba, but Flint is surplus to requirements and could be on his way out, so he’ll need replacing. Sanderson’s arrival would kill two birds with one stone.

Cardiff have started the new season slowly with only one win, one draw and two defeats from their four Championship games, so adding quality to the backline will be a good thing. Sanderson thrived in the Welsh capital before, so he should be open to a return.

Why Wednesday?

The Owls aren’t short of centre-backs with Tom Lees, Julian Borner, Dominic Iorfa, Chey Dunkley and Joost van Aken at their disposal, but they have a lot of players out with injury.

According to Yorkshire Live, Iorfa has a hamstring problem, Lees has a groin injury and Dunkley is recovering from a leg break, so Wednesday are considering Flint from Cardiff to strengthen at centre-back.

The Owls have issues at right-back too with Osaze Urhoghide building up his match fitness from a knee injury and Liam Palmer out with a back problem, so they could benefit from Sanderson too.

Time will tell which club are successful.
