Mick McCarthy has made Wolves first signing of the closed season, picking up much sought after forward Sam Vokes from Bournemouth in a four year deal for an undisclosed fee.

Talking to the clubs official site, McCarthy said

‘Sam is a great young talent who our scouts have been watching for some time. I saw him when he played for the Wales Under-21s against England last week and he was excellent.

‘He is a target man who is physical, strong and good in the air. He was involved in a real scrap in trying to keep Bournemouth up at the end of the season. It was tough but will have been a good experience for such a young player.

‘I have been impressed with him and I think he is quite capable of doing well in this league despite his tender years.’

McCarthy has snapped up Vokes from under the noses of several other clubs said to be interested including Newcastle United, Aston Villa and Celtic, and is in keeping with his young and hungry ethos.

And while his 16 goals in 54 appearances for Bournemouth may not inspire many to hail his arrival as a massive coup, 12 of those came last season, and possibly more telling, his strike rate at International level is 4 in 9, which this week earned him a call up to the Wales full squad.

Welcome to the pack Sam.
