After the understandable non-priority of the EFL Cup clash against Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers were back to more like their best on Sunday as we welcomed Dean Smith’s newly promoted side to Molineux for our league clash.
A dominant first half should’ve seen us out of sight really, although we only had Ruben Neves’ strike to show for it, but late on in the second half Raul Jimenez helped himself to another goal and all Villa could muster was a stoppage time consolation.
With plenty of praise flowing following the game and the performance, one player to come in for plenty of positive reviews was experienced midfielder Joao Moutinho. The 33-year-old was our fourth best player according to Whoscored but he was again steady, impressive and the glue in the middle of the park.
With Villa fans raving about John McGinn, Wolves fans on social media highlighted the Portuguese veteran for the way he more than won that particular battle and made his own mark on the game with the assist.
Beautiful ????????

Joao Moutinho is the best player I’ve ever seen in a Wolves shirt, and a lot of it just goes under the radar. I thought he was sensational today.

Where do we start on today? I thought we incredible today. Everyone played out of their skin. Dendoncker, Coady and Saiss were quality. Probably Coady’s best game without Boly beside him. Moutinho and Neves were unbelievable. Would probably say Joao’s best game in a wolves shirt.
